I stumbled upon an old article today titled The 25 most difficult questions you’ll be asked on a job interview. It’s actually a really good article, and I’d agree that these are some of the most difficult, but also most common job interview questions.

After reading it, I did want to point out a few things about job interviews:

Question #2 - Make sure you’ve done your research on the company BEFORE you go in for the job interview. I can’t emphasize this enough. Check out my Episode 10 for more information on how to research a company during your job search.

Questions #4 & #6 - Make sure you word your answer in the form of “benefits” to their company, not “features.” Remember, in all of your answers, be answering the underlying question “What’s in it for me?” that the job interviewer is asking.

Check out my Episode 8 for more information on features versus benefits.

Question #9 - I disagree. You should be able to be up and running within the first few weeks. If you can’t be contributing withing a few weeks, then why should they hire you? Sure, it might take the 6 months to a year to make a huge, meaningful contribution, but don’t emphasize THAT point in the job interview! Emphasize how you are a fast learner, and will be contributing as soon as you can.

Question #18 - This is a good point. Be sure to keep this answer positive, even if you hated your previous job or were treated badly. This positive attitude will go way further in impressing the job interviewer than a bitter answer.

Question #23 - Good observation on the salary discussion. Especially in a first job interview, try to put off the discussion until you know more about the job and know if they are interested in hiring you. Like they said in the article, be sure to tie salary to job responsibilities.

Again, like I always say, the biggest thing you can do to help your job interviews is - Research and know the company before you go in!
